Commentary

Yeah, we lifted half of these words and phrases from President Trump's April 2, 2025 "Liberation Day" speech during which he unleashed nasty tariffs on countries the world over. The following day, as we watched the stock market drop like a lead balloon, we cooked up five satirical items related to the way we believe the day may come to be viewed in the fullness of time. Mush the real (even-numbered) and fake (odd-numbered) items together, and you have this whimsical top ten list.

Besides being the newly coined "Liberation Day," April 2 is also National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day, so item 9 isn't really a satirical item. The remaining odd-numbered items are jokes about how we view the tariff strategy as a misguided approach that is likely to backfire. Item 7 characterizes the tariff strategy as an unforced error.
