Commentary

We recently came across the word "conclusory" in U.S. Judge Aileen Cannon's August 7 ruling. After looking up the unfamiliar word to find out what it means, we penned a funny top ten list that featured a strange concoction of high-minded actual words and Trumpy-sounding made-up words. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we decided to expand that funny top ten list from one installment to two. And here it is, Johnny!

As a judge with limited trial experience, Judge Cannon has taken a lot of incoming for her rulings on the Trump Mar-a-Lago documents case, including the current case and the previous related litigation over the search warrant executed at Mar-a-Lago on August 8, 2022. Last December she suffered the indignity of having her special master ruling overturned by the 11th Circuit on appeal.

To our untrained minds, Judge Cannon's ruling appeared well thought-out, but it ultimately would have reversed almost 50 years of precedent, essentially allowing every subject of every search warrant "to block government investigations after the execution of the warrant." Judge Cannon may have been unaware that her effort to allow it—just this once—for her favorite (and totally adorable) former president would open the door for the same argument to be used by actual criminals (lol), but fortunately sounder minds prevailed.

Yeah, we're aware that our highly sarcastic treatment makes Judge Cannon seem more like a Trump fan-girl than a highly trained jurist (and also makes us seem like jerks), but sometimes the truth hurts!

Thus we begin this funny top ten list with five highfalutin words that could appear in a legal ruling, and then shift gears with five made-up Trumpified words that paint Judge Cannon as a total Trump fan-girl. Doh!
